How Do I Stain My Wooden Porch Or Deck?

Maximize your outdoor entertainment

Your porch and deck are great places to relax, entertain neighbors and enjoy meals with friends. There’s a lot you can do to enhance your outdoor spaces with stain or paint to make them even more welcoming places for you to spend your time. Looking for a way to breathe life into your front porch?

Try 3 quick tips

  1. Look up! The deck ceiling is one of the best places to make a fun impact with a splash of colour. If you have overhead beams, try using a shade that contrasts your deck floor's main colour to transform these utilitarian components into eye-catching accents.
  2. If you want to make your deck floor the focal point, stain your floor boards a shade or two lighter than your home’s base colour.
  3. Interested in creating a holistic feel to your home's exterior? Maintain your home's outside appearance by staining your railings the same hue as your roof.

Follow these steps to achieve the perfect stain finish*

  1. Sweep debris from deck.
  2. Use a product like Olympic® Premium Deck Cleaner to remove dirt and contaminants for a true colour finish and improved stain penetration for maximum durability (follow label instructions).
  3. You may want to stain your railings before your floor boards.
  4. For darker stains, work from the top down and protect your surface from drips.
  5. For clear, toner and semi-transparent stains, apply a thin coat with a high-quality brush, roller, paint pad, or spray.
  6. For solid stains, apply two thin coats with a brush, roller, or paint pad. To avoid lap marks, apply to a few boards at a time, keeping a wet edge.
  7. For best results, backbrush into the surface to work finish into the wood and ensure the coating is even.
  8. Treat all areas of the wood, including joints, edges and ends.
  9. Let dry.

*WARNING! If you scrape, sand, or remove old paint, you may release lead dust or fumes. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO LEAD DUST OR FUMES CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS, SUCH AS BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN. PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID EXPOSURE. Wear a properly fitted NIOSH-approved respirator and prevent skin contact to control lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and a wet mop. Before you start, find out how to protect yourself and your family by contacting USEPA National Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or log on to www.epa.gov/lead. Follow these instructions to control exposure to other hazardous substances that may be released during surface preparation.
Always test a small, hidden area, rinse and let dry before using this product. Olympic Premium Deck Cleaner should be applied at full strength with a deck care sprayer or a plastic pump-style garden sprayer and hose. Spray the affected area liberally and allow to stand for five to 10 minutes. No scrubbing necessary. Thoroughly rinse treated surface and surrounding areas with water to neutralize cleaning action.
Please refer to the Product Label, Technical Data Sheet (TDS) or Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for safety and detailed application instructions.
